A new finding of raised cholesterol: what are the important medical decisions to be made?
  • What do the current guidelines say?
  • When to treat?
  • What baseline tests required?
  • When should HDL & LDL be requested?
  • Should other important conditions be considered? Further testing needed?
Features to note in this report
  1. This is the first cholesterol test for this patient. No previous tests are seen in the LIS
  2. The cholesterol is raised, but we need to re-check to establish baseline
  3. HDL and LDL have not been requested
  4. There is no record of work up for diabetes or hypothyroidism in the LIS for this patient
  5. Follow up testing: Only makes recommendations (eg: glucose, TSH) when appropriate
Why provide interpretations in lipid testing?
  • CHD is a major public health problem.
  • Guidelines need to be implemented consistently. Lab can help by prompting key areas
  • Many doctors overlook...
    • Re-checking lipids to establish a baseline
    • Excluding secondary causes, especially diabetes
    • HDL and LDL
  • Specific advice: what to do now for this patient?
LabWizard can help answer these questions, and give specific advice, because it sees the patient in the LIS record, not just one or two test results.

A young woman with fertility studies: what are the important medical decisions to be made?
  • What do these results mean? Are they diagnostic?
  • Are further tests needed?
  • When to perform follow up tests?
  • What other conditions need to be considered? Any testing required?
Features to note in this report
  1. Pattern looks suspicious - but we need to confirm that it is sustained over time.
  2. TSH and prolactin are important: but these have been reported previously. No need to repeat.
  3. Since polycystic ovary syndrome is suspected, androgens are important... but only recommended since they have not been done before!!
Why provide interpretations in fertility testing?
  • Fertility is a sensitive area. Patients deserve the best and most efficient work up.
  • Fertility investigations are often ordered in primary care, but interpretation can be difficult.
  • There are many test on the fertility menu... doctors need to be guided to the right tests
  • Efficient work-up means quicker time to diagnosis, fewer procedures for the patient, and a better outcome for all
